The proper way to Store Whiskey

As whisky grows in popularity, it has become increasingly important to properly store your bottles. Whether you eventually open or sell your treasures, preserving the boxes, labels and, most importantly, liquid in the bottle is crucial. These are 5 tips for keeping good care of whiskey bottles

1. Keep Them Cool
Bottles should be kept in a cool space, with a stable, non-extreme temperature. Fluctuating temps can cause the liquid in the bottle to expand, eventually damaging the cork and stopper, while humidity works on the outer surface, damaging the labels and boxes.

2. Avoid Sunlight
Alongside extreme temperatures, direct sunlight can do a number on your whiskey. Enough of it over a long period of time will degrade the flavours, throwing off the delicate balance of your precious whiskey. Plus, sunlight affects the temperature, which can destabilise the spirit. Dark and cool spaces are optimal.

3. Care For The Cork
Even though your whiskey should stand at attention, it’s a good idea to keep the corks moist. Tilt your bottles horizontally two to three times a year so that the liquid soaks the cork, then restore the bottles to their upright position. This method keeps the cork “fresh” and oxidation at a minimum.

4. Open With Caution
Once opened, whiskey in the bottle will oxidise faster, and flavour compounds will slowly change and grow dull. Finishing off a bottle of whiskey within two months is best, so bare that in mind when opening sealed bottles.

5. Easy Access Temperature Controlled Storage
Think about creating a Space For Change. Keep Whiskey in expert care. A temperature controlled space at a secured Self Storage facility is the best way to care for Whisky. The Whisky can be placed into a cellar that is both dark and cool.

Kennards Self Storage Miranda has a Cool room at the facility that is temperature controlled. There are a 10 different sized spaces so we cater for the every day user to a collector. Cellar spaces start from a 10 case space to a 400 case space. Access is 24 hours a day and each space has an alarm on it for peace of mind. The price you pay is for a one month period and there is no lease. Place the bottles in your cellar space and close the door and put your lock on it and that's it.

Organising a cellar is also very easy. Call Cameron or Brittany on (02) 9544 8600 and they will be happy to have a chat and give you some information regarding size and price. They will invite you to have a look at the cellars at 160 Port Hacking Road Miranda. When you visit they will show you how to enter the facility using your unique pin number at the pin pad. This will give you access to the chilled area and switch off the alarm on your cellar space. You then open the lock with keys you keep.

If time is an issue you can see storage prices and rent online here.

Self Storage prices are easy to find, and you will see all the options. You can then choose the space for you and rent the space all with in a few easy clicks.

Once organised Cameron and Brittany will check your ID and show you the space you have booked. They will also invite you to use the free parcel pick up service. If you purchase Whisky online, you can deliver them to the Miranda facility and Cameron or Brittany will accept the delivery on your behalf with out you being there. They will then send you an sms to let you know to pick up your delivery with in the next 48 hours.
