What To Look For In Self Storage

July 17, 2023 by Kennards Self Storage

There are many self storage facilities to choose from out there. As a first timer, you may ask, 'Which one is most suitable for me?” This question has been asked numerous times by our valued first time storers.

Embarking on your first self storage experience can be both exciting and daunting. Whether you're moving, decluttering, or simply in need of extra space, self storage offers a convenient solution. To ensure a smooth and successful storage journey, it's important to familiarize yourself with the process.

Here is a helpful guide for first-time self storage users, covering essential tips and considerations to make your experience a positive one.

When it comes to storing your valuable belongings, it's important to find a storage facility that offers both security and convenience. One such facility that fits the bill is Kennards Self Storage Thornleigh. Located in the leafy suburb of Thornleigh, this state-of-the-art storage facility provides a wide range of storage options to suit your needs.

  • Moving date: knowing your move out date is critical. This will help you to easily organise necessary self storage arrangements and find suitable removalists to assist you.
  • Know your measurements: common terminology used in choosing the best storage unit size include square metres (m2: length x width), or cubic metres (m3: length x width x height). A tape measure is recommended during the planning process.
  • Compile a list: walk around your dwelling and stick post-it notes on items you are willing to store. Write down a list of those items.
  • Questions: compile a list of questions you would like to ask the self storage centre personnel.
  • Self storage arrangements: consider what items you can stack; what items are not suitable for storage; and large items which you may need to note down its dimensions.
  • Location: is the self storage centre close to you? Think about where you are moving to and consider the self storage area that is closest to your new location. This will save your commute time.
  • Review and ratings: what are the general reviews and ratings for the service of the storage facility?
  • Visit the facility: visual understanding is very important. As Joe Sacco once said: “it is a visual world and people will respond to visuals.” Visiting the self storage centre will help you plan better.
  • Storage sizes: find out what storage sizes are offered at the facility. Browse their website and visit the facility. Do they have a variety of storage sizes to choose from? Be prepared and find out how many items you have. Request for centre personnel to show you the actual storage sizes.
  • Reservation: find out how long you can reserve a storage unit. Will you need to pay a deposit? Will you forfeit for the deposit if it does not go ahead?
  • Contracts: is the storage hire agreement a locked in contract or a non-locked in contract? This is handy to understand if you are planning a vacate date.
  • Insurance coverage: what are the details of the insurance coverage? Note that self storage is the extension of your dwelling, however, many storers access the same facility and unexpected accidents may occur. It is highly recommended to choose appropriate insurance coverage for your goods in storage and most importantly read the Product Disclosure Statement before you make up your mind.
  • Access hours: many self storage facilities offer different access hours to their actual store front.
  • Equipment: find out how you will be conveying your items to the storage unit onsite. Does the storage facility offer free trolleys, pallet jacks, and/or forklifts for storers to access onsite?
  • Facilities: consider if the self storage facility offer extra services such as conference rooms and toilets.
  • Packing material: check out what packing material is available to purchase onsite. Good quality pacing boxes are highly recommended. If your valuable items are going to be stacked and retrieved regularly, good strong boxes will be required to avoid tearing or collapsing. This will make the moving process a lot easier as well.
  • Cleanliness: is the storage facility and the units clean and pest controlled?
  • Security: are there many surveillance cameras, padlock checks, and pin access to the centre.
  • Rubbish disposal: are there many commercial bins available to use onsite?
  • Notice to vacate: how many days of notice do you need to inform the self storage centre? Are there any fees involved if I exit early?
  • Fees: are there early exit fees, reservation fees, bin usage, cleaning fees etc?
  • Unused rent and insurance: will the unused rent and insurance fees be refunded?
  • Parking: does the self storage facility have ample parking space? Can a large truck or container park outside?
  • Lighting: is the self storage facility lighting bright? Is there lighting available for each unit?
  • Alarm: are storage units individually alarmed?
  • Lift access: is the goods lift large enough to lift the biggest item?
  • Door size of the storage space: can your largest item fit through the door? If not, ask if the centre has storage with a roller door or double doors.
  • Less busy hours: ask the centre personnel when it is the least busy time of the day to avoid parking congestion.
  • Removalist: find out a recommended removalist from the centre. This will save you a lot of time, money and hassles. Also remember to supervise your removalist to store the items according to your plan. Always check if the truck of the removalist is fully emptied before you make payment.
  • Shelving: is shelving available for hiring or purchase? Shelving is one of the great ways to organise your items and utilise your space in the self storage unit.
  • Moving transport: are there any free transport offers by the centre for moving?
